What's happening in art so far...

After a short summer, it's easy to believe that we already have been in school for 4 weeks!
It's been a whirlwind of a start so here is a brief recap of what the older students have been doing...

5th Grade has started creating Contour Drawings of their shoes.
Using their fabulous powers of observation!

This sandal was tough, but she was totally up for the challenge!! #one proud art teacher!!

Then adding a Zentangle pattern sock to add a bit of color and contrast.

4th Grade is creating Linear Landscapes.
Using lots of lines, organic shapes and patterns.
My talented 4th graders are making these lovely landscapes.

 Now for a little color!!

Stay tuned for more amazing artwork from more grade levels!!

Rocking and Rolling

Things got a bit crazy before Winter Break, so I got a bit behind on posting. :(
Here are few pieces of awesome artwork to catch everyone up on what we were up to.

Fourth Grade learned about Pop Art and TWO artists. First was Keith Haring and his ROLLING (Or dancing) characters. We drew our own characters in an Andy Warhol inspired 4 square layout. Then used Complementary Colors to finish it up.

Thanks to Dali's Moustache for the inspiration.

Fifth Grade made these ROCKIN' Color Wheels. Not only did we review our color wheel in a fun way. But students also learned about Value by creating tints and shades of each color.

Mrs. Art Teacher did something similar with her older students. I simplified ours a bit.

It's a New Year! Which means learning about 'New Artists' and making New Art!!

First Grade has started the new year off learning about Georgia O'Keeffe. Her flowers that are as big as giants, making people feel as if they are tiny little bugs. I was inspired by Painted Paper, but tried to put my own spin of things.

Stay tuned for the finished results.

Fifth Grade is starting the year by learning about Andy Warhol. We are taking his 4 square layout and using it to creating some amazing Pirate Ships.

We will be adding Analogous Color Schemes...I can't wait to see how these turn out.

Second Grade are making some marvelous Monochromatic Fish.
After a little practice of mixing Values and talking about Tints and Shades, we put our new skills to work with these fabulous fish.

Great Wave Zentangle

4th and 5th grade are starting out with the same project this year. (I don't usually do that)
Both are learning about line, rhythm and value.
First, we read a book called "The Great Wave" by Veronique Massenot (Author), Bruno Pilorget (Illustrator).
It is a story and illustrations inspired by the artwork of Hokusai and his print "The Great Wave", from his series "The Thirty-Six views of Mount Fuji".

After the story we talked about rhythm and how to show movement on a flat page. Next, I gave students step by step direction on how to draw a wave. Then they started to get creative by adding zentangle patterns and rhythms inside the ocean.

Don't you just love the sea theme?

After filling the ocean with zentangles. We started to talk value. And I gave students tips and techniques on how to use watercolor paint to create values to keep a monochromatic color scheme for the wave.

I encouraged students to chose a color other than blue.

I think the purple waves are my favorite.
After the ocean was painted, we talked contrast. What color choice would really look good for their sky and Mt. Fuji?
Some used Complementary Colors... and boy do they POP!

Again my smART Artists never cease to amaze me!!!
(These are finished 4th grade examples )
(I was inspired by a Pinterest post. Thank you, Alum Creek Elementary and your wonderful Artsonia page: Check it out here! )

Here are some finished 5th grade creations!
