Sandcastles

Out first project for Art Club this year was Sandcastles!
It goes along with our school theme; "Where Success is a Shore Thing!"
I did the same lesson with both groups (3rd-5th and Kinder-2nd),
but of course each group brought their own set of skills to the lesson.
Day 1: We drew out our sandcastles and traced with a crayon.
Day 2: We started to watercolor paint. With the younger group they were given a bit of salt to add with their watercolor to create that sand texture effect.

Kinder.-2nd

With the older group they were also given salt but also, a few REAL shells to add to their paintings. The results are so amazing!!

Art Club is ALL about Drawing

This year in Art Club it is all about experimenting and trying new techniques. I've always loved art club because it's a smaller group of kids who all REALLY enjoy art! So this year we ALL (Yes even me) are going to try some new ways to make art. Each quarter will focus on a different medium. This quarter is all about drawing. I'm showing the older kids how to hone their skills and the younger ones get to use some new supplies.

First lesson for the littles (K-2nd)...CAVE ART. Cave men are the first artists you know. First we went on a virtual tour of the Lascaux Cave. Then we made our own cave wall and animals using chalk. (The closest I wanted to give them to charcoal.) Well we got a bit messy, but made some wonderful art.
We worked outside for a little extra texture.

The older group (3rd-5th) started by drawing a Still Life.
We talked about contour with this fun video on Vimeo: Contour Video and how to draw from observation.
And boy was I impressed!!

Tigers

In Kindergarten thru Second grade Art Club we made some terrific tigers! Inspired by artist Henri Rousseau and his wonderful jungle paintings. First we made a tiger from clay then we created our own tiger hidden in the jungle picture.

I found a great pinch pot technique on how to make the tigers, I adapted it from a lesson I saw on Deep Space Sparkle.

The tiger collages turned out great! After we painted our tigers we cut them out and glued them onto a green paper to look like they are in the jungle. I encouraged students to add leaves and other jungle animals to hide in their picture like Rousseau.

Blue Dog (who is not always blue)

Art Club (3rd-5th) learned about George Rodrigue and his "Blue Dog". First we watched a YouTube video of George Rodrigue from "Sunday Morning", to learn more about this artist and his Dog.

After that we drew the dog, breaking it down into steps and shapes we recognize. When students were ready to paint their dogs, I reminded them that Blue Dog is not always blue. The next day when it was time for backgrounds on a separate paper we painted monochromatic, concentric shapes, the color was to be the same or contrast the "Blue Dog".

Another great resource I used was the book,
"Why is Blue Dog Blue? A Tale of Colors" by George Rodrigue.

A few of the amazing artworks!

Elephants

Art Club is finishing up for the 2nd Quarter and we wrapped up with an Elephant theme. Inspired by Salvador Dali and his long legged elephant painting. We talked about Surrealism and how these artists would try to paint what they dreamed about, so sometimes things would be normal and other times a bit strange. The kids really liked this idea, in their elephant pictures some adding things from their own dreams, dancing fruit and a snowflake as the sun. The results were AMAZING!!

Along with our long legged elephants we also constructed clay elephants. Again this talented group of artists continue to astound and amaze me!!

 Strawberry and Watermelon Elephants. LOVE!

 Oh so COLORFUL!!
And the more modern and sleek, black.
